It’s the Best of Canadian Maritimes!

It’s the Best of Canadian Maritimes!

February 19, 2018

Author: Lisa Crockett/Friday, February 16, 2018/Categories: Travel News

O Canada! The first one sold out instantly, so we added a second Best of Canadian Maritime caravan to meet demand, departing August 3, 2018. This is your chance to celebrate our Northern neighbor’s diverse and colorful history, culture, cuisine and beauty in her glistening crown jewels – the provinces of New Brunswick (NB), Nova Scotia (NS), and Prince Edward Island (PEI) on Fantasy’s 27-Day Best of Canadian Maritime Caravans. A New Year’s resolution to enjoy your RV more in 2018 makes this the perfect tour for you as you eat, drink and explore these three provinces to your heart’s content.

“Merry times in the Maritimes” begin with a detailed orientation and luscious lobster dinner in the stunning coastal beauty of Bar Harbor, Maine. The journey ends 1,500 miles later in PEI, the smallest of the Maritime provinces.

Kingsbrae Gardens

First stop in the big three is NB, one of the first areas colonized by the French in the early 1600s. Guided bus tours of both St. Andrews and St. John reveal their natural beauty and city sights. In St. Andrews, we’ll stop to smell the flowers and enjoy lunch in the 27-acre wonderland of Kingsbrae Gardens. Here, Fantasy suggests the popular option of a low tide drive or even walk across a sandbar to Ministers Island where railroad magnate Sir William Van Horne build his 50-room summer “cottage.” Don’t try this at high tide! Our tour of St. John aka “Saint Awesome” includes Ft. Howe, built by the British in 1777; Carlton Martell Tower; Old City Market, the oldest continuing farmer’s market in all of Canada; and the geologic wonders of Reversing Falls.

At the confluence of the Bay of Fundy and the St. John River, the world's highest tides actually reverse the flow of the mighty St. John River over the course of 12 1/2 hours. In Hopewell Cape, we witness another amazing natural spectacle – the massive rock formations called Hopewell Rocks or Flowerpot Rocks that stand 40-70 feet high. During low tide, we’ll walk in their towering shadows right on the ocean, only to return later to see the monster tides arrive and cover our footsteps.

Flowerpot Rocks

Our discovery of Nova Scotia, aka “New Scotland” starts with the Bay of Fundy Tidal Bore. This natural phenomenon is anything but boring when outflowing river waters flow back upstream as the tide roars in – to the tune of 160 billion tons of water. Oceanfront camping is the dramatic setting in Annapolis Royal. Itinerary highlights here include guided tours of Port Royal Habitation, the Scottish post of Fort Anne and a hearty German Bakery lunch. In the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lunenburg, we experience the rich fishing heritage of the Atlantic coast of Canada at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic. You have the option here of visiting the tranquil working fishing villages of Mahone Bay and Blue Rocks, both just a short drive out of Lunenburg.

Lunenburg

The fiercely proud maritime history that forged Halifax, the capital of NS, is detailed on a guided bus tour. First stop is Citadel National Historic Site, the large hill used by the British to successfully defend the harbor below. Next is Fairview Cemetery, the final resting place for more than 100 souls who perished in the 1912 RMS Titanic disaster. And at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, we learn about shipboard life aboard the Titanic while examining the many relics salvaged from the ship. We’ll cruise the scenic Halifax harbor on a tall ship, and “lunch” at the sophisticated 4-diamond Prince George Hotel. Choose the option of visiting Peggy’s Cove, a tiny but colorful fishing village, most famous for its iconic lighthouse dating back to 1914.

Fortress of LouisbourgNorth Sydney, NS is bursting with energy! Together, we’ll explore Cape Breton Island on the Eastern end. We’ll literally step back into the French 1700s on a guided tour of the Fortress of Louisbourg, the largest reconstruction project in all of North America. It’s living, breathing history like Colonial Williamsburg, only smaller and in French! Here, you chat with fishermen, sailors, and servants as cannon fire thunders all around and soldiers in uniform patrol the streets for any visitors (like us!) who are having too much fun. Fire a musket; sip rum, a popular drink in 18th century Louisbourg; or observe how lace is painstakingly made by hand.

Anne of Green Gables

The final four days of your caravan are spent in the petite paradise of PEI. We’ll explore the breathtaking North Shore hugging the Atlantic at PEI National Park with an authentic “lobstah” fishing demo. A tour of the fishing town North Rustico includes world-famous dinner at Fisherman’s Wharf featuring catch-of-the-day. Rumor has it that “lobstahis on the menu! We’ll tour the Green Gables Home, the bucolic farm setting from the beloved 1908 novel, Anne of Green Gables. We’ll lunch in a secret spot on the banks of the Clyde River. We call into Charlottetown, PEI’s vibrant seaside capital, famous for its exquisite landscaping, historic homes and year-round festivals. As luck would have it, we’re in town for the 2018 Charlottetown Festival, just in time to enjoy a musical theater performance at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. Fantasy’s traditional farewell dinner and goodbye breakfast are a fitting finale to our beautiful journey.

Space is filling fast on this second tour! Let NS, NB and PEI sing you the siren sound of the sea and show you the rich Maritime experience and rugged beauty of Canada’s friendly coastal communities. And best of all – do it all your way, with the help of your friends at Fantasy!
